Description
Water Beds is a soothing bedtime story that answers the question of how marine mammals (animals that breathe air) manage to sleep in the ocean. Youngsters meet ten marine mammals, including sea otters, bottlenose dolphins, manatees, harbor seals, humpback whales and walruses, and learn about each animal s unique sleeping habits. Although the brief portraits are based on up-to-date scientific research, author Gail Langer Karwoski weaves the facts into simple, poetic language. Connie McLennan s rich oil paintings capture the ocean s habitats and its appealing creatures. The story invites infantren to drift into peaceful sleep on the gentle waves of imagination. The educational supplement includes teaching trivia about marine mammals, their sleeping habits, and how they have adapted to their watery environment. It also includes a make-your-own marine mammal craft using various animal adaptations.

First Grade Teacher in Love with the book WATER BEDS!
As a first grade teacher, I teach an ocean unit when we study animal habitats. This book was a great resource! The book goes beyond the animals of the ocean and teaches the unique ways marine mammals sleep. Even as an adult, I learned so much from this book. Lesson Extensions and activities are included in the back of the book which made my planning a lot easier!
My students enjoyed hearing the story and the descriptions of the way the marine mammals sleep. They were especially entertained learning about a dolphins rest time. I had several infantren closing one eye trying to imagine how one could rest in such a manner.
Gail Karowski's whimsical words and unique facts, combined with Connie McLennan's brilliant illustrations make this a great book for both infantren and adults!

A Good Book Choice for Bedtime or Learning
We bought this book because it had other great reviews and we thought it would be a nice, educational bedtime story to read to our kids.
We weren't disappointed...smooth, flowing and relaxing text about ocean animals sleeping habits and an excellent further learning, "For Creative Minds", section in the back. The mammals discussed in the book are: orcas, harbor seals, dolphins, manatees, humpback whales, northern fur seals, beluga whales, walruses, elephant seals and sea otters.
The illustrations of the ocean mammals are bright and colorful with lots of detail.
One funny thing about the illustrations though, the infant is asleep (eyes closed) in the water with all the different animals, sometimes above the water and sometimes below. The first time we read the story we were almost finished when our son asked, "Mommy, is that boy dead?" Before he mentioned it I hadn't really thought about it, but the little boy (even though he does have bubbles coming out of his nose when under the water) does look sort of, well...drowned or dead. We quickly assured him the little boy was fine, just imagining what it would be like if he was sleeping in the water like one of those sea animals. The end of the book also reassures that "It's fun to imagine a sleep in the deep. . ."
I guess with the author's last words and our explanation everything made sense to him because it is now one of his favorite books to read at bedtime.
