Reasonably priced; Compressor Style Ice Cream Maker
Okay, so I bought this months ago (for the dog days of summer) and I guess it's time to write up a review :-)
First of all, I think that this is a great compressor style ice-cream maker for what you pay ('compressor' meaning you do not need to freeze any ice buckets before hand or fuss around with crushed ice and rock salt. The cooling unit is built right in). The only reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of how loud this unit runs. (Loud enough that if I hadn't been warned by others of just how 'loud' the motor runs on this, I would have thought I had received a damaged or defective unit). It's a rough, angry, grinding noise - one that'll make you think the motor is struggling and or about to kick the bucket.
That said, I have used this ice-cream maker numerous times with semi-successful results (all non-successful results were due to my 'creative' attempts to come up with my own 'ice-cream recipes', lol). Ice-cream comes out 'soft serve' from the bucket and requires a little time to 'set' in the freezer if you want a firmer texture (which is my preference). My problem is that while my ice-cream would be perfect after half an hour in the freezer, any longer than that and it would become a solid ice block (one you couldn't chisel through!!). My father has suggested adding a shot of liqueur to my recipes to prevent it from freezing solid like that. I have yet to try this technique but I will give it a go come next summer.
FYI - You can also make slushy's for kids by adding fruit juice to the canister. Some soda's will also work well in this regard. :)
