Description

The olive ridley (Lepidochelys oliveacea) is a small sea turtle found primarily in tropical waters. Olive ridleys are rare throughout most of their range and are every where considered a threatened species. The populations that nest in Mexico are listed as endangered. The olive ridey is most famous for its great nesting aggregations, sometimes referred to as arribadas. Although not all adult olive ridleys join arribadas, most do. While arribadas are associated with strong offshore winds, certain phases of the moon, and particular tides; never-the-less, there is a high degree of unpredictability at arribada sites. This is a silver and enamel pin. Master artisans paint each article by hand using solutions containing colored granules of glass. Next, they fire the pieces in a kiln to produce an alluring richness of color. It measures approximately 3.7cm by 3.8cm.
