Description

Manatees (Trichechus manatus) are large aquatic mammals sometimes referred to as sea cows. The name manatee comes from the Spanish manati, which is thought to derive from the Carib word meaning breast. Manatees are herbivores that spend most of their time grazing in shallow waters, and much of the rest of their time sleeping. Manatees inhabit the shallow, marshy coastal areas and rivers of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. There are two other species of manatee that live in the Amazon basin, and West Africa. All three species of manatees are listed as being vulnerable to extinction. This is a pair of silver and enamel post earrings. Master artisans paint each article by hand using solutions containing colored granules of glass. Next, they fire the pieces in a kiln to produce an alluring richness of color. They measure approximately 0.9cm by 1.5cm.
