Description
When threatened, a clown triggerfish (Balistoides conspicillum) will dive into a hole or crevice and tightly wedge itself into the shelter by erecting the large dorsal spine on its head. The large spine is locked in place by a second, smaller spine behind it. Another spine on the triggerfishs belly is also extended to help securely wedge the fish in place. Triggerfish also use this wedging technique at night when they rest. Fishermen gave the triggerfish its name when they learned that pressing the second smaller dorsal spine causes the larger spine to unlock. The orange lips of the triggerfish resemble those of a clown. This is a pair of silver and enamel dangle earrings. Master artisans paint each article by hand using solutions containing colored granules of glass. Next, they fire the pieces in a kiln to produce an alluring richness of color. They measure approximately 2.0cm by 1.1cm.
