Description
Leafy seadragons (Phycodurus eques) are found only in the waters of southern Australia. They belong to the Family Syngnathidae, which includes seahorses and pipefish. Seadragons are incredibly well camouflaged, with their leaf-like appendages bearing an amazing resemblance to kelp and sea grass. As well as looking like seaweed, seadragons employ a rhythmic rocking motion that mimics the surging action of kelp. As in seahorses, seadragons reverse roles when rearing their young. The female lays her eggs under the males tail, then he protects the eggs until they hatch in about two months. This is a silver and enamel pin. Master artisans paint each article by hand using solutions containing colored granules of glass. Next, they fire the pieces in a kiln to produce an alluring richness of color. It measures approximately 5.5cm by 3.3cm.
