Description
Koi, descendants of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio), are now bred in every country of the world, making them the most popular freshwater ornamental pond fish. These beautiful multi-hued fish are often referred to as living jewels or swimming flowers. Koi are first mentioned in 2,500 year old Chinese writings. In the early 1800s, Japanese rice farmers began to breed Koi to enhance natural color mutations. At first the farmers kept the colorful carp for themselves. However, interest in Koi spread throughout Japan. In 1914, prized Koi were first placed in Emperor Hirohitos Imperial Palace moat. This is a pair of silver and enamel post earrings. Master artisans paint each article by hand using solutions containing colored granules of glass. Next, they fire the pieces in a kiln to produce an alluring richness of color. They measure approximately 0.7cm by 1.7cm.
