Description
Polka-dot groupers (Cromileptes altivelis) are festive looking fish with slender tapering heads. Their bodies are off-white with black spots all over, giving rise to one of their common names, the polka-dot grouper. They are also known as panther groupers. Polka-dot groupers are found in lagoons and coral reefs of the tropical Indo-west Pacific region. Polka-dot groupers are solitary predators which hide patiently in rocky crevasses waiting to ambush their prey. Their polka-dot pattern disrupts the shape of their bodies, making it more difficult for prey and other would-be predators to see them. This is a silver and enamel pin. Master artisans paint each article by hand using solutions containing colored granules of glass. Next, they fire the pieces in a kiln to produce an alluring richness of color. It measures approximately 5.5cm by 2.9cm.
